[Maharashtra Update] Uddhav Thackeray Announced Partial Lockdown Due To Coronavirus

The  Government of Maharashtra, facing one of its worst-ever public health crises in recent history in the form of the Covid-19 outbreak, is considering drastic measures like complete stoppage of the local suburban train and buses services in key cities like Mumbai.

The Maharashtra government asked its employees to be present in the offices on alternate days in the wake of the novel Coronavirus, or Covid-19, outbreak.

The Maharashtra government also asked to reduce the frequency of local trains, buses, and Mumbai Metro by 50 percent to avoid crowding.

The Government instructed to keep the government staff at 50 percent on any given day and office heads to rotate the attendance on alternate days.

The Government also made a decision not to allow passengers to travel standing on a bus. A safe distance will be maintained between two sitting commuters.

The vehicular traffic will also be regulated to avoid congestion.

The state administration has taken a step towards a lockdown; for now, it is partial. Henceforth, even trains, state transport buses, private buses, metros will be running at half the capacity. All these transport systems have been asked to carry half of their passenger-carrying capacity.

A shutdown will also inconvenience the BMC, police, and Fire brigade personnel from reaching their offices, causing further problems.

Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad have recorded the maximum cases of Coronavirus. The total number of coronavirus cases reached 52 on Friday with three more persons testing positive, state Health Minister Rajesh Tope informed. They include one patient each in Mumbai, Pune, and Pimpri-Chinchwad, all of them having a history returning from foreign countries.

Government officials said they would act if the number of people infected by Covid-19 rises sharply. According to government officials, the state will be taking an ‘instant and immediate review of shutting down the city’ if there is a sudden increase in Mumbai.

Meanwhile, the state Election Commission postponed elections to local gram panchayats and other local body polls in Maharashtra. In Pune, the state’s second-biggest city, which has seen the maximum number of cases at 17, restaurant and hotel owners said that they would shut down operations on their own.
