Will we see a new Princes Mera?
Hollywood actress Amber Heard may lose her role as Princess Mera in the upcoming DCEU movie Aquaman 2. The feud between the spouses became public, and the whole world got to see their dirty linen.
An audio recording turned the battle in favour of Depp because it proved that Heard did hit Depp and called him a baby. Soon after this revelation, fans of Johnny Depp launched a petition requesting Warner Brothers to replace Amber Heard as Princess Mera in Aquaman 2. The petition has received 300,000 signatures so far. This number can go up to 500,000.
What happened?
Johnny Depp and Amber Heard ended their 18-month long marriage in early 2017. Amber Heard claimed that she was a victim of domestic violence, and Depp used to hit her. Public sided with Heard.
Depp was mocked and insulted for being an abuser. As a result of this, Depp presented his side of the story, saying that he was abused and hit by Heard. Public refused to believe Depp and jokes attacks against him intensified.
Depp no longer Captain Jack Sparrow?
In addition to all the above, things got worse for Depp in 2018 because of an Op-ed authored by Heard in the Washington Post. Op-ed spoke about the plight of women who were victims of domestic violence and who spoke against it. The article did not name Depp but had subtle hints referring it to him.
Depp retaliated by filing a civil defamation suit against Heard, wherein he demanded 50 million dollars as damages. Rumors floated that Depp was dropped as Captain Jack Sparrow from Pirates of the Caribbean, and Depp tried to get Amber Heard removed from Aquaman.
Battle goes on
Fans of Depp showed solidarity with Depp by launching two campaigns. One to remove Amber Heard as Mera in Aquaman 2 and the second to take Depp back as Captain Jack Sparrow.
What’s Best for Business?
Disney never confirmed firing Depp from the Pirates of the Caribbean. Amber Heard played Mera in Aquaman. Depp played Gellert Grindelwald in the Fantastic Beast series.The petitions are not enough to influence the Studios. The studio does what is best for the business.
