Golden Globes is one of the most prestigious and most awaited award ceremonies for Hollywood. For the fourth time, Ricky Gervais was to host the award show, and hence some roasting was expected.
Ricky Gervais hosted Golden globes this year, and he had a lot to say. But there was a specific awkward moment where he addressed almost everyone in the room. And Tom Hanks gave an expression that became the most meme-worthy moment of the evening.
It all started with Ricky calling out Apple for launching a streaming service this year. That made CEO Tim Cook look nervous. Ricky quoted, “Apple roared into the TV game with The Morning Show.” A superb drama about the importance of dignity and doing the right thing, made by a company that runs sweatshops in China.”
Then came the turn of all the actors, writers, and directors in the room. “Well, you say you wake, but the companies you work for…unbelievable. Apple, Amazon, Disney. If ISIS started a streaming service, you would call your agent, wouldn’t you?”.The annoyance in his voice was evident. “So if you do win an award tonight, don’t use it as a platform to make a political speech. You’re in no position to lecture the public about anything. You know nothing about the real world. Most of you spent less time in school than Greta Thunberg.”
The room filled with nervous laughter, but Ricky continued saying, “So, if you win, come up, accept your little award, thank your agent and your god, and—” (The network then cut out his mic.)
Well, that did make the audience a lot nervous, and Tom Hank’s reaction captured on camera made it all clear. That’s Ricky Gervais for you! As for members, they sure got a template for their 2020 stocks!
