The Gymnastics Samurai is a Japanese Sports Anime, directed by Hisatoshi Shimizu and animated by MAPPA. Unlike other animes, it is not based on any source material, it is an original work. The series debuted on October 11 2020 on TV Asahi’s NUMAnimation. The pilot episode was called “Retiring Samurai”, the second episode called “Rock-Bottom Samurai” aired on October 18, 2020, and finally the third episode “Dueling Samurai” aired on October 25, 2020. The plot synopsis of the show is simple. Shotaro Aragaki, a lifelong disciple of the Gymnastics, had to retire, due to the wishes of his coach Noriyuki Amasuka and his daughter Rei. But then something happens which changes the life of the Aragaki Family forever.

In the third episode of the series, Tetsuo Minamino challenges Aragaki, saying that if he loses Aragaki would have to retire for good. Arakgaki accepts the challenge only to lose the match one month and a half later. Amasuka and Leonardo beg Minamino to let Aragaki perform, to which he says that he will meet him in the next competition.

The Gymnastics Samurai Discussion

It will be interesting to see how Aragaki rises up after the humiliating defeat he had just endured. Will he be able to back up his words, or would he just prove that his body is old and tired to compete in gymnastics. Another question that comes in our mind is what role does his daughter Rei has to play in his story. Since the show is not based on any manga, we just have to wait for the episodes to be telecast.
