Mindhunter is a dark-psychological thriller that premiered on Netflix in 2017. It is a crime drama that focuses on the early days of the FBI’s behavioral sciences unit. It is based on John E Douglas’ crime novella: Mindhunter: Inside the FBI’s Elite Serial Crime Unit. The series revolves around FBI agents Holden FordHolden Ford and Bill Tench, and psychologist Wendy Carr. They work at the FBI’s Behavioural Sciences Unit and interview imprisoned serial killers.
So far, the show has seen two extremely successful seasons. Subsequently, the question arises, will there be a third?

Will Mindhunter Season 3 Happen? The straightforward answer is No.
In fact, Netflix has put the series on indefinite hold. The show was first released in October 2017. Following this, the second season was released in August 2019. As a result of both the seasons doing very well among audiences, Netflix renewed Mindhunter for a third season. But now, Mindhunter Season 3 has been put on hold indefinitely.
Why has Mindhunter Season 3 been put on hold?
Well, the series has been put on hold because one of its producers, David Fincher, wishes to prioritize and work on some of his other projects. Fincher has decided to step back from Mindhunter Season 3 to work on his upcoming films Mank and another Netflix series, “Love, Death, and Robots.” The series’ creator, Joe Penhall, also has similar commitments that he needs to fulfill.
As a result, even the cast has been released from their contracts, and the series has been put on hold. Therefore, it is safe to assume that there will not be Mindhunter Season 3 in the near future.

In an article published by Hollywood Reporter, it was stated that David Fincher has mapped out at least five seasons of the series. Additionally, in a statement made to the Entertainment Weekly by a Netflix spokesperson, “He [Fincher] may revisit Mindhunter again in the future, but in the meantime felt it wasn’t fair to the actors to hold them from seeking other work while he was exploring new work of his own.”
Based on all this information, the earliest that we can expect Mindhunter Season 3 to be released is 2022.

Well, assuming that Mindhunter might be renewed for a new season, we can also hope that all three main cast members will reprise their roles in Mindhunter Season 3. The main cast is comprised of Jonathan Groff, Holt McCallany, and Anna Trov. But nothing is set in stone, and nothing can truly be said until an official is released.
