Avatar 2 : Release Date, Storyline and News and Updates

Avatar 2 is one of four planned sequels to the 2009 film Avatar, set to be released in December 2022. The film has been under development since 2010 and completed preproduction in 2017. Also, producers completed much of the motion capture and principal photography by early 2020. With filming having concluded in September 2020, the film is now in postproduction.

Avatar 2: Storyline

Plot specifics are currently as elusive as the ‘Unobtainium’ the human invaders were trying to extract from Pandora in the original Avatar. We do know, however, that the story will pick up around a decade after the first film, and that Jake Sully (whose human consciousness was permanently downloaded into his Navi body) and Neytiri now have children: Neteyam, Lo’ak, Tuktirey. It’s also been confirmed that much of the movie will take place around Pandora’s oceans, with the newly introduced sea-faring Metkayina clan playing a key role.

About the Movie

“We decided for the sequels not to do necessarily what other science fiction movies do, which is if they want water they go to the ocean planet; and if they want snow, they go to the ice planet,” Cameron’s long-term producing partner Jon Landau said in an interview with Slashfilm. “We looked at all the wonders the Earth shows us, and we realized we could travel our whole lives and not see all the true wonders Earth has. So Jim decided to set the sequels all on Pandora. Our stories introduce us to different environments, and also different cultures.”

Of course, there are also going to be run-ins with those annoying, moon-pillaging humans of the Resources Development Association (RDA). “The storyline in the sequels really follows Jake and Neytiri, and their children,” Cameron told Variety. “It’s more of a family saga about the struggle with the humans.”

Avatar 2 Release Date

Avatar 2 : Release Date, Storyline and News and Updates

Producers originally set Avatar 2 for release back in 2015, but one delay after another set in, which pushed the date back again and again. The producers always slated the movie for a Christmas release, but what year that would happen was never very clear. Finally, release dates for not just Avatar 2, but all the sequels were set. It seemed like that date might stick. However, producers announced one additional delay when Disney set its first release calendar following the Fox merger. Avatar 2 is now ready to open on December 17, 2021.

In September 2020, Cameron revealed that they were “100% complete” on Avatar 2 and around 95% finished on Avatar 3. This is likely just in terms of the live-action filming in New Zealand, and not on the complete movie itself.
