The Orville is a comedy-drama science fiction television series which was first aired on Fox. Fox renewed the series in May 2019. Now fans are eager about Orville Season 3!
The show follows the crew of the starship, USS Orville, on their episodic adventures. Several Science Fiction sources serve as the inspiration for the series. Also, the most notable of them is the Star Trek original and its Next-generation series.
Season one received generally negative reviews from critics, while season two was better-received. The show had relatively successful ratings on Fox, becoming the broadcaster’s highest-rated Thursday show. It was also termed as Fox’s “most-viewed debut drama” since 2015.
Change Of Plans for Orville Season 3: Shift from Fox TV to Hulu
Disney acquired 21st Century Fox in March 2019. After this, Fox renewed the Orville in May 2019. Then, due to deadline issues, MacFarlane decided to shift from Fox TV to Hulu.
When asked about this move, MacFarlane responded “My friends at the network understood what I was trying to do with this series, and they’ve done a spectacular job of marketing, launching and programming it for these past two seasons. But as the show has evolved and become more ambitious production-wise, I determined that I would not be able to deliver episodes until 2020, which would be challenging for the network,” MacFarlane continued.
This show has grown on me. It doesn’t always nail the mix between sci-fi and stupid funny very well but it is usually entertaining.

“So we began to discuss how best to support the third season in a way that worked for the show. It’s exactly this kind of willingness to accommodate a show’s creative needs that are made me want to stick around for so long. I am hugely indebted to Charlie Collier and Fox Entertainment for their generosity and look forward to developing future projects there. And to my new friends at Hulu, I look forward to our new partnership exploring the galaxy together.”
Making a shift to Hulu allowed more production time. Also, it gave greater flexibility with episode order and running time.
The Orville Returns to its Space journey!
Like many other productions, Filming was put on hold for The Orville due to the covid-19 induced lockdown in March 2020. But now, filming will restart from the first week of December. “There are lots of conversations going on at this moment, but nobody has made a hard decision on returning to work.
We want to get back to work as soon as we can, but we want to do it safely. And whatever strictures are in place, we don’t want them to get in the way of the show we want to make,” executive producer David Goodman said (via TrekMovie).
The Orville Season 3: Release Date and Trailer
The Filming Will most probably start by the first week of December. It will reportedly take about 6-7 months to film and edit. This means we might be looking towards mid-2021, or in the worst-case scenario, late 2021 release. And whenever that will be, the trailer will be released months before.
