No amount of rational logic could explain certain things happening around us, be it the haunting of certain houses or the Ouija board predictions. But for every believer of the paranormal, there exists a person ready to term it as some superstitious hallucination. Paranormal Season 1 talks about this and more!
Such is the story of Dr. Refaat Ismail, a chain-smoker skeptic, who works at the University.
This Egyptian Series, launched on the eve of Halloween, is based on a novel with the same name. Though the novel is written from the viewpoint of Dr. Refaat, the series contains a third-party narration which helps the viewers to judge what is wrong and right.
The Conflicted Main Character of Paranormal Season 1
Dr. Refaat is a complicated character. The complicated nature comes from 2 internal conflicts in his life
One, Dr. Refaat had a childhood haunting experience with Shiraz (a small girl from the manor who was apparently a spirit), but he is reluctant to accept the supernatural. It’s just that the things happening around him have no possible rational explanation. As the series progress, we find him adopting more irrational (spiritual) ways to get rid of his problems.
Second, his love life complicates with him forgetting to wear his engagement ring, the one given to him by his fiancé Huwaida. Then, the meeting with his old romance, Maggie, compels him to question his life decisions.
The Storyline
The storyline strikes an excellent balance between presenting us a different horror story every episode and developing the main story with each passing episode.
The episodes show us the personality of Dr. Refaat’s shift from that of a skeptic to a believer. Every episode is well thought, and though some parts feel like a drag, the story keeps you glued to the screen.
The Possibility of having another Season!
Though the story is encapsulating and the directors have done a good job with their limited budgets, the series will have to garner a huge amount of viewership through word of mouth and other means. Netflix doesn’t renew series with a low yet loyal viewer base, the number of views it gets will determine its future.
Netflix normally announces the renewal/cancellation of next seasons after 3 to 6 weeks, and we could expect a decision by the end of 2020.
Season 2 Storyline
In the penultimate episode, Dr. Refaat learns how to lucid dream and then maneuvers through his cerebral maze to find the answers to his misery. He blames himself for the death of his brother Reda. The climax shows Dr. Refaat returning to a mansion where his mother worked years ago, and him discovering the real-life corpse of the ghost, Shiraz. The disembodied spirit speaks to the professor through Maggie’s body and reveals that she was trying to help all along. The episode concludes with a letter from Refaat’s friend, Louis. Louis might be in the possession of the Devil or is playing a vicious game with his friend.
Season 2 will (most probably) see the development of an affair between Dr. Refaat and Maggie. It may also show us the evil( to be decided by the viewers) motivations of Louis. It might also reveal the meaning of Louis’s last words on the letter “No More Games”.
