Sword Art Season 5 Storyline
The basic premise of the story is that a bunch of video gamers play a game called “Sword Art Online”. But one fine day, they find themselves trapped in the game by the creator, Akihiko Kayaba. The only way out is to reach the 100th level and defeat the final boss. However, if they lose in the game, they lose their life as well. By episode 14, Kirito defeats Akihiko, but to protect him, his love-interest Asuna takes a blow and dies, as a reward for killing him, Akihiko logs out all the players from the game.
Kirito wakes up in the real world in a hospital but he finds out that Asuna has not woken up. He later finds out Asuna along with 300 other players who never woke up are trapped in another game called Alfheim Online. He later finds out that she has been enslaved by her real-life ex-fiancee Sugou Nobuyuki in the game. In the end, he defeats him and finds Asuna awake in real life. In the end, it is revealed that Aincrad castle from Sword Art has been brought into ALfheim, he then vows to beat the castle with his friends.
In the second season, one year after the events of 1st Season, a new game called Gun Gale Online has been introduced. Kirito logs in to the game and finds himself trapped in a female avatar. He then signs up for the BOB tournament. At the end of the tournament, he and Sinon, another female player he meets defeat Death Gun, the member of the laughing coffin guild. In the end, both of them commit suicide, thereby becoming the co-winners of the tournament. After that, they log back into Alfheim. Asuna meets another player named Yuuki and form a friendship immediately after having a duel. But Yuuki has AIDS due to a botched blood transfusion she received as a child. As she dies, Asuna and Kirito find out that Kayaba Akihiko was responsible for the blood transfusion.
In the third Season, Kirito defeats Quinella at the expense of Eugene. Kirito takes Alice into the World’s End Altar, but somehow Kirito goes unconscious. At the end of Season 4, Asuna and Kirito become the Star King and Queen.
Official Announcement
There is no official announcement about Sword Art Season 5 so far, but we do know that Aniplex wants to adapt the entire Alicization arc. So there is a chance of an announcement coming shortly. The Studios have also announced a Sword Art Online: Progressive anime, which was called a reboot instead of a direct sequel. So a cynical approach would say that the studios have probably scrapped all the plans. But there is no confirmation so far, so we would have to wait and see.
The Cast
As of yet, there are no casting announcements for Sword Art Season 5, but we can predict some of the cast members to come back as well as some new additions to the roster, as each season has always introduced new characters. Yoshitsugu Matsuoka as Kirito, Haruka Tomatsu as Asuna, Ayana Taketatsu as Laefa, Miyuki Sawashiro as Sinon can all be expected to come back. There might be a big role for Ai Kayano as Alice as well.
Sword Art Season 5 Release Date
All seasons of Sword Art have had 20-25 episodes on average. So it is a big series. So even if it went into production tomorrow, it would take a lot of time for the writing to be done. Add to that voice recording, editing and all should take up a good portion of the year.
So our best guess for Season 5 to be released should be somewhere around 2022-2023.
The Trailer
Sword Art can be watched on Netflix, Crunchyroll, and Hulu. So, those of you who haven’t watched it, can go over there and watch it.
